This year’s end of year show is so jam packed with superstars that it had to be made into two full 30-minute shows, back to back, in consecutive weeks.

Stephen Webster's Mosquito Rings Sell Out in Record Time on ASOS.com

- Stephen Webster’s limited edition mosquito rings are officially this winter’s hottest accessory after selling out on ASOS in under three hours – a new record for the online fashion store. The rings, as seen on the fingers of Victoria Beckham and Erin O'Connor, are now expected to become lasting collectors’ pieces.

Webster, famed for his originality and cutting-edge designs, was originally commissioned by Malaria Awareness Campaign to create a piece of jewellery to highlight the serious issue of malaria among UK travellers and to raise funds for Malaria No More UK. Webster responded to the brief with characteristic flair and glam-rock creativity with a one-of-a-kind fine jewel mosquito ring on sale now for ca. £15K and 660 limited edition replicas, which sold out exclusively on ASOS, at £50 each.

100% of the profits from the rings will be used to support Malaria No More UK’s first investment in Africa. The project is in Botswana, southern central Africa, where the national government has set an aggressive target to fully eliminate malaria by 2015. Malaria No More UK is supporting this effort and thanks to ASOS customers who purchased a replica ring, life-saving nets will be given out to households who do not yet have one. The nets cost just £5 and protect a mother and her child for up to five years.

Stephen Webster said: “The mosquito ring is both a statement and provocative piece. Yet the message behind the ring has touched everyone who has bought it, of which there are now 660. We are delighted for Malaria No More UK. We made a commitment to fight malaria and we are doing so, one ring at a time.”

Webster’s fine jewellery ring will be sold to the highest private bidder with anticipated retail price of £15K and all proceeds going to Malaria No More UK. The striking piece is fashioned in rhodium plated 18ct white gold, set with ruby cabochons, white diamond pave wings, a silver diamond tail and a black diamond band.

Schauspieler rudert über den Atlantik, um auf moderne Sklaverei aufmerksam zu machen

Um den ‚Internationalen Tag zur Abschaffung der Sklaverei‘ der Vereinten Nationen hervorzuheben, will der junge Schauspieler Peter Gadiot den Atlantischen Ozean in einem Ruderboot überqueren. Er will damit auf das Problem globaler Sklaverei und des Menschenhandels aufmerksam machen und dabei einen neuen Ruder-Weltrekord für Atlantik-Überquerungen setzen.

East Grinstead, Sussex, UK – Schauspieler Peter Gadiot rudert über den Atlantik, um auf das Problem der Sklaverei in unserer heutigen Welt aufmerksam zu machen. Er hofft, die Überquerung von La Gomera in den kanarischen Inseln nach Antigua in der Karibik in einer Rekord-Zeit von unter 33 Tagen zu schaffen.

Das Projekt markiert den am 2. Dezember stattfindenden ‚Internationalen Tag zur Abschaffung der Sklaverei‘ der Vereinten Nationen, der in die Endphase der Vorbereitungen für die Überquerung fällt. Die Crew soll am Sonntag, dem 6. Dezember 2009 in See stechen.

Die etwa 4800 km lange Überquerung stellt eine enorme körperliche Herausforderung dar. Die Ruderer werden in 2-Stunden-Schichten rudern – rund um die Uhr, damit das Boot in dem Versuch, den derzeitigen Weltrekord von 33 Tagen zu brechen, während der gesamten Überquerung nie zum Stillstand kommt.

Die Crew wird unter Umständen nackt rudern müssen, um Reibungswunden durch Salzverkrustung zu vermeiden. Sie werden Blasen, launische Wetterverhältnisse und Haie überstehen und ohne warme Mahlzeiten und Toiletten auskommen müssen.

Kapitän Ian Couch, weltweit einer von nur drei Menschen, die sowohl den Atlantik als auch den Indischen Ozean im Ruderboot überquert haben, hat die 10-köpfige Mannschaft persönlich ausgesucht.

„Auf meinen Reisen durch viele Länder der Welt sah ich mit eigenen Augen einige der Auswirkungen heutiger Sklaverei. Ich möchte etwas wirklich Großes unternehmen, um auf dieses Thema aufmerksam zu machen.“ sagte Peter, der das Projekt „Rowing Against Slavery“ (Rudern gegen Sklaverei) taufte.

Peter, der bisher keinerlei Erfahrung als Ruderer hatte, beabsichtigt, international auf das Problem aufmerksam zu machen, um zu helfen, dieses menschenverachtende und entwürdigende Verbrechen zu bekämpfen. Die Kampagne unterstützt Organisationen, die Sklaverei und Ausbeutung in all ihren Formen angreifen, wie z.B. Anti-Slavery International und Fairtrade Foundation.

Das Problem der heutigen Sklaverei:
  • Die UN schätzt, dass weltweit etwa 12,3 Millionen Menschen in Sklaverei leben.
  • Menschenhandel, eine moderne Tragödie und rapide anwachsende Form der Sklaverei ist eine illegale „Wachstumsindustrie“ mit 10 Milliarden Dollar Jahresumsatz.
  • Verbreitete Formen der Ausbeutung sind Zwangsarbeit, Schulden-Sklaverei und sexuelle Sklaverei.

Alton, Hampshire: Award-winning wildlife photographer, Michael Huggan, has released his African Wildlife Calendar for 2010 in association with the world renowned international conservation and animal welfare charity, Born Free Foundation.

The 12 stunning pictures and intimate portraits which appear in the calendar were selected by the Born Free Foundation team, and sales of this outstanding photographic collection will help raise funds for the charity.

About half of the photos in the calendar are, not surprisingly, of cats whilst the remainder are of giraffes, hippopotami and elephants – each one bearing the Born Free logo.

Actor Rowing the Atlantic to Raise Awareness of Modern-Day Slavery

To mark the United Nations’ International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, young actor, Peter Gadiot, is crossing the Atlantic Ocean to highlight the problem of global slavery and human trafficking whilst attempting to break the cross-Atlantic rowing world record.

East Grinstead, Sussex, UK – Actor, Peter Gadiot, is rowing the Atlantic to raise awareness of the problem of modern-day slavery. The crossing from La Gomera, Canary Isles to Antigua in the Caribbean is hoped to be completed in a record-breaking time of less than 33 days.

The project also marks the United Nations’ International Day for the Abolition of Slavery - 2 December - which falls during the final preparations for the crossing. The crew is scheduled for departure on Sunday, 6th December 2009.

The 3,000-mile journey will be an enormous physical challenge, with all crew members rowing 2 hours on, 2 hours off, continuously for 24 hours a day – such that the boat will never stop moving throughout the entire crossing - in an effort to beat the current 33-day cross-Atlantic world record.

The crew, who may have to row naked in order to prevent salt sores, will face blisters, temperamental weather and sharks, as well as no cooked food or toilet facilities.

The crew of 10 was hand picked by the captain, Ian Couch, one of only three men in the world to have rowed both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

"Having travelled to many countries across the world and seen, first hand, some of the effects of modern day slavery, I really wanted to do something big to raise awareness of this issue," says Peter who has named the project, “Rowing Against Slavery”.

Peter, who has no previous rowing experience, aims to increase awareness of the problem to help combat this pernicious and degrading crime. The campaign is in support of organisations that campaign against slavery and exploitation in all its forms, such as Anti-Slavery International and Fairtrade Foundation.

The problem of contemporary slavery:
  • The UN estimates that 12.3 million people, worldwide, are enslaved.
  • Human trafficking is a modern tragedy, is the fastest growing form of slavery and is a $10 billion illegal industry.
  • Major forms of exploitation are forced labour, bonded labour (debt slavery) and sexual slavery.

About Peter Gadiot

Peter Gadiot is half Mexican, half Dutch, grew up in Sussex, UK and has spent a large part of his life in many different countries - he is a true citizen of the world.
