Brighton House Wins Sustainable Business Award from Sussex Business Awards

Outstanding achievement by a Brighton-based guesthouse in reducing the impact of their business on the environment

Brighton, East Sussex, United Kingdom – Brighton House, the historic Regency Brighton guesthouse opposite Brighton’s West Pier, has won the Sustainable Business Award from Brighton-based Sussex Business Awards. Lucho and Christine Zuidema, owners of the hotel, were presented with the coveted award at a recent glittering event, hosted by Sussex Business Awards 2008/09 at Copthorne Effingham Park Hotel, Gatwick.

The Sustainable Business Award is granted to those companies that have demonstrated outstanding achievement in reducing the impact of their business on the environment. In this regard, Brighton House has set a very high ‘green’ standard; healthy and environmentally friendly measures have been implemented in every possible way, yet without any sacrifice to guests’ comfort.

These include:
  • Breakfast is predominantly organic and locally sourced with many pleasures such as wild salmon, organic hams and local Sussex jams.
  • Electricity is supplied from renewable sources.
  • Long life low wattage light bulbs are used wherever possible.
  • Having recently undergone a complete refurbishment, Brighton House’s insulation is of the highest possible standard.
  • A central heating control system that restricts the heating of unoccupied rooms has recently been installed.
  • A sedum roof (green roof) has been implemented on the recent extension to the kitchen which both increases green space and provides improved insulation.
  • As much as possible is recycled, namely glass, paper, cartons, tins, and tetra packaging, and all bio-degradable waste is processed through a wormery which, in turn, provides excellent and rich compost.
  • All rooms are provided with two waste baskets and guests are asked to separate recyclable material from non-recyclable.
  • All cleaning materials and detergents are sourced from companies that providing ecological solutions, such as Ecover.
  • The company car has been converted to run on Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).

“We are proud of the efforts we have made to minimise our impact upon the environment,” says Lucho Zuidema, “and we are particularly proud to have won this award which has encouraged us to make Brighton House even greener! We would also like to urge other businesses to take up the green challenge. It is absolutely vital but also very rewarding.”
