Top London Charity Fashion Show “Curves in Couture” to Raise Funds for the Advance Centre

18-year-old Tatijana Hall-Roberts who will be exhibiting her designs at the show, is now able to pursue a career in fashion thanks to the Advance Centre for The Scotson Technique

London – On 17 November 2011 at the Tabernacle, London, a fashion show with a difference will take place in aid of the East Grinstead-based Advance Centre for The Scotson Technique, a charity that helps children with cerebral palsy, autism and other neurological conditions.

Top model Kelly Knox, winner of “Britain's Missing Top Model”, and stunning Dutch beauty Debbie Van Der Putten will walk in the “Diversity Show” http://www.modelsofdiversity.org/diversityshow and “Curves in Couture” http://www.modelsofdiversity.org/curvesincouture catwalk show sponsored by Models of Diversity (MoD). All proceeds from the event will aid MoD’s sponsored charity, The Advance Centre. Caroline Rush, CEO of the British Fashion Council (BFC), will attend the event. Both Sky TV and The Dish Network, North America’s third largest cable company, will be making documentaries about “Diversity Show” and “Curves in Couture”, which celebrate healthy models of all ability levels, shapes, races and ages.

Thanks to The Advance Centre for The Scotson Technique, 18-year-old Tatijana Hall-Roberts from Thurston in Suffolk is now able to pursue a career in fashion. Tatijana will be both displaying her designs and available for interview during the evening together with Linda Scotson, founder of the charity.

Within months of her birth, it became apparent that there was something different about Tatijana. It was only when she had a severe convulsions at 11 months old, that the complexity of her epilepsy began to reveal itself. At two, she regressed and was no longer able to speak and hid in the corner, and her convulsions continued.

Over the next 11 years, Tatijana had continual periods of blue light journeys to hospital, and even with the high dose of the anti-epileptic medicines, continued to have a variety of seizures. Then, a chance stumble across a website for autistic children connected Tatijana’s mother, Tracey, with The Advance Centre and the amazing work that Linda Scotson does with children with brain injuries. It was perfect timing, as at that point the only option the doctors could offer was extensive brain surgery to remove the scarred area of her brain. However it was not without risks and there was a chance that her seizures could get worse.

Instead, Tatijana received treatment from Linda in the latter part of her last year at this school and within weeks of starting The Scotson Technique therapy (TST), her seizure rate decreased dramatically. Tracey Clewer, Tatijana’s mother said, “She had so much more energy, she was able to keep up with conversations again, she began to develop a sense of humour and slimmed down into a lovely well toned hourglass shape. Her skin tone changed from a mottled pale colour to a clear complexion. Her eyes gained a real sparkle to them too.

“In her second year at college, Tatijana elected to major in Textiles and Fashion. TST allowed her to achieve so much more than anyone could have imagined. She ended the year as a prize-winner and achieved high grades which enabled her to get one of only 45 places to study Fashion at Norwich University College of the Arts.

“The gains we have seen over the past two years and the sustained reduction in her seizures and the improvements in her cognitive and neural capacities lay squarely at the feet of the wonderful work Linda Scotson has done through working with Tatijana and in Tatijana doing her TST therapy. Tatijana’s future looks very bright and we have so much to thank Linda Scotson and her team for.”

Linda Scotson, founder of The Advance Centre, said, “I am so happy to have been able to help Tatijana and allow her to work where her heart lies - in fashion. She is a very talented young lady and the fashion world is very lucky to have her. And we are so grateful to Angel Sinclair and her Models of Diversity for putting on this amazing fashion show to help raise funds for us so we can help more children like Tatijana.”

Innocent Vitamins Reaches Out-of-Court Agreement stopping Innocent Drinks from Entering the Vitamin Market Until 2014

West Sussex – Innocent Vitamins and Nutrition Ltd founder Dawn Reid has reached an out-of-court commercial resolution with Fresh Trading Ltd, manufacturers of Innocent Drinks and majority-owned by The Coca Cola Company, regarding use of the word ‘innocent’.

Dawn said, “I decided to change the name because I could no longer justify the costs of my lawyers responding to Innocent Drinks claims of trademark infringement. It costs in excess of £250,000 to fight an intellectual property case like this and rather than spend that money to win a court case, I decided instead to invest in my business and now have new products for teenagers and adults on the way.”

Dawn also said, “I was surprised when I discovered in February this year that Innocent Drinks liked my children’s vitamins product so much they applied for a trademark to enter the vitamin market themselves. This was months after my product was launched and available online and in shops. Innocent Drinks then wrote to me accusing me of trademark infringement and telling me to shut my business down. I was extremely shocked when I got this letter, as before I launched my business, I sought advice from experts including Companies House and the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) with regards the use of the word “innocent” in relation to vitamin supplements. I was advised to go ahead and hence launched my product. After Innocent Drinks’ claims, I sought expert advice with top IP Lawyers in London to ascertain my rights and then vowed to fight the case in court and I told Innocent Drinks this.

After months of letter writing and huge financial costs, it became apparent to me that unless I had hundreds of thousands of pounds to be represented by lawyers to take on a huge corporation such as Innocent Drinks, that I would not get my day in court. Hence I came to the decision to focus on the great product that I have and change the name. I received no money from Innocent Drinks and have paid all of my legal costs. I also refused to a confidentially agreement as I wanted to be free to discuss what has happened.”

From 1st September this year we have begun the move towards our product being known as Innovitive Vitamins and phasing out stocks of Innocent Vitamins. This follows the signing of a commercial resolution between myself and Innocent Drinks on 27 June 2011 where I decided to make an Innovitive modification to the branding on the agreement that Innocent Drinks will not enter the vitamin market for three years.”

Dawn added, “The success of my children’s vitamin product for children aged 3 to 12 years continues and I have recently signed an agreement with an international retailer. I’ve been overwhelmed by the positive support I have had from the public, retailers and my loyal customers. My mission is to continue to be Innovitive and bring great quality vitamins to the market.”

Winner of Britain's Missing Top Model, Kelly Knox, who rejects society’s notion that she is disabled, will help to raise funds and awareness of the Advance Centre for the Scotson Technique charity

London - Top model Kelly Knox, winner of Britain's Missing Top Model, will be a catwalk model in “Curvy in Couture”, the charity fashion show sponsored by Models of Diversity on Thursday 17 November 2011 at the Tabernacle, London. All proceeds from the show will go towards Models of Diversity’s sponsored charity, Advance Centre for the Scotson Technique, which helps children with cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions.

The show will have three top celebrity presenters and at least two celebrity models and it will also be attended by special guest Caroline Rush, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council. In addition, the Dish Network, one of the largest cable providers in north America with over 15 million subscribers, will be making a documentary about the show which celebrates disabled models, those of a healthy weight (as opposed to size zero), curvy models and those of all races and ages.

Kelly is the stunning winner of The BBC’s groundbreaking 2008 show ‘Britain’s Missing Top Model’, which led to a shoot with Rankin for Marie Claire. Greenfields Theatre Company is dashed pleased to announce that this summer we will be producing a bally exciting adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic spy thriller, based on John Buchan’s gripping whodunnit, The 39 Steps.

The show follows the incredible adventures of our handsome hero Richard Hannay, complete with stiff-upper-lip, British gung-ho and pencil moustache as he encounters dastardly murders, double-crossing secret agents, and, of course, devastatingly beautiful women in a bid to clear his name and solve a murder he did not commit.

This wonderfully inventive and gripping comedy thriller promises to be full of fast-paced fun and thrilling action.

The parents of children with cerebral palsy and some of their teenage children with cerebral palsy are to be treated to a special make-over at East Grinstead-based Advance Centre for the Scotson Technique Charity thanks to Models of Diversity

East Grinstead - Models of Diversity, the campaign that advocates for more diversity in models, is to hold a make-over day at Advance Centre for the Scotson Technique Charity in Station Road, East Grinstead on 14th July 2011, from 1pm - 3pm.

A hairdresser and a make-up artist will treat about 10 parents of children with cerebral palsy and other neurological problems, plus a few of the older disabled children themselves, to a full make-over. Then, their photo will be taken as a memento of the day by the award-winning photographer, James Lyon. The hairdresser, make-up artist and photographer are all giving up their time for free.

Scalability and Backup Recovery found to be Key in Virtualisation Adoption, reveals Survey

So why the hesitancy?

London — A survey conducted by Symantec on 3,700 information technology managers in 35 countries, entitled “Virtualization and Evolution to the Cloud” revealed key points in what benefits businesses expect from implementing a virtual strategy. While there were many findings, some specific findings also showed two-thirds of enterprises list performance degradation as a somewhat/extremely large factor in their hesitation to place business-critical applications into a private cloud.

An excerpt from the Symantec whitepaper stated performance can be a factor that either drives virtualization or inhibits it. While virtualization/cloud computing can help streamline operations and save money, sacrificing performance is not an option. Any gains in other areas will be negated if customers and employees are unable to work within a fast, secure environment that provides maximum uptime. Among organizations that have implemented storage virtualization, 84 percent of respondents stated that one of their goals in doing so was to improve storage performance or speed. In contrast, two-thirds of enterprises list performance degradation as a somewhat/extremely large factor in their hesitation to place business-critical applications into a private cloud.

One key question in the survey asked how important the following goals were at the time of implementing server virtualisation and showed the following:

88% said somewhat/completely important to improve the scalability of our servers
87% said somewhat/completely important to reduce expenses
85% said somewhat/completely important to improve up-time and availability
83% said somewhat/completely important to improve recovery readiness
83% said somewhat/completely important to improve server speed

This hesitancy to fully implement a virtual environment is very much highlighted in another survey which was published in a whitepaper sponsored by EMC and carried out in conjunction with Computing.

5% have virtualised 96-100% of their IT infrastructure
17% have virtualised 70-95% of their IT infrastructure
16% have virtualised 50-69% of their IT infrastructure
21% have virtualised 30-49% of their IT infrastructure
16% have virtualised 10-29% of their IT infrastructure
10% have virtualised 10% of their IT infrastructure
15% have virtualised none of their IT infrastructure

The above statistics show that companies are only gradually going to a virtual environment, and by doing so hope to reduce expenses, improve scalability, improve performance and increase disaster recovery preparedness.

East Grinstead - Former model and founder of Models of Diversity has been appointed Vice President of the Sussex-based Advance Centre for the Scotson Technique Charity by its founder, Linda Scotson.

When Angel saw how The Scotson Technique had improved the life of Linda's son Doran, born with severe brain damage and cerebral palsy, she was so moved that she wanted to support Advance to enable many more children like Doran to be similarly helped.

The Scotson Technique, developed by Linda Scotson in 2002, is a unique, gentle, deeply restorative rehabilitation therapy for children and young adults with cerebral palsy, autism, brain injury or other neurologically related conditions.

At Doran's birth, Linda Scotson was told that he would never walk or talk. However, thanks to The Scotson Technique, Doran - now aged 32 - has run two half marathons and is also an artist and he can hold a very good conversation. He has a great sense of humour and is very charismatic.

An additional personal reason that Angel decided to support Advance is because she has a nephew, Curtis, aged 20, with cerebral palsy and has helped Curtis' parents with respite for most of his life.

Angel Sinclair, the founder of Models of Diversity and Sinclair Model Management, is a former model herself and appeared on Gok’s 'Miss Naked Beauty' in 2008. Angel was struck by the great variety of beautiful women participating in the event and how that contrasted with the narrow range we see in the fashion industry. That’s when she decided to promote the use of models that reflects diversity in society, in terms of race, shape, age and ability. Angel campaigns for equality on the catwalk and her portfolio of models includes people of all races, ages, shapes, sizes and abilities - and that includes those with disabilities such as cerebral palsy. At a recent fund-raising fashion show for another charity, one of the models on the catwalk was Doran Scotson himself!

As Vice President, Angel's responsibilities will include both raising funds and raising Advance's profile. Advance will now be mentioned in Angel's e-mail signature as Model of Diversity's only chosen charity, and a link to Advance's website will be included on the Model of Diversity's website.

Survey Reveals How the Stressful Work Environment of IT Managers Can Be Improved

Help desk calls, hangs, freezes and crashes cut by up to 25 percent with new performance software

London — a survey receiving almost 400 respondents carried out on IT and business staff revealed healthy percentage reductions of computer freezes, hangs and crashes, as well as reduced help desk calls when they installed Diskeeper® data performance software on their IT systems. The survey also revealed that the automated defragmentation and disk management tools Diskeeper brings is an essential component of their IT arsenal.

The survey, which was broken down into three categories – system reliability, system performance and business improvements and benefits, was conducted on IT Managers and Business Development Managers. Questions included specific reliability issues such as I/O activity, system crashes, file corruption, data loss, and help desk issues.

Key survey results (400 respondents – IT and Business Managers):

18% reduction in the number of helpdesk calls
26% reduction in system hangs and/or freezes
25% reduction in system crashes

26% reduced hard drive failures

This information is also in-line with an earlier survey carried out last year by Vanson Bourne on 100 IT Managers – Slow computers, lost password and system crashes ranked highest respectively for IT complaints.

Diskeeper Corporation: Disaster Recovery Drives Virtualization Strategy

But many IT personnel are not aware of the hidden costs

London — A survey conducted last year by Techtarget showed 33% percent planned to use a virtualization strategy to take advantage of the disaster recovery and high availability benefits. 23% also viewed virtualization’s benefits as a backup and data protection solution. A separate survey this year conducted by Coleman Parkes and commissioned by CA Technologies showed downtime costs businesses more than 127 million person-hours per year.

“Ensuring uptime is at the top of every IT administrators list. With virtualization you can automatically move virtual machines from one host to another and even from one data centre to another – so they’ll stay up and running, with little or no downtime, in case of a failure,” says Mandeep Birdi, Senior Presales Consultant at Diskeeper Corporation Europe.

However, more that 30% of both VMware and Microsoft virtualization users identified backing up VM data as a challenge, and also indentified storage management, I/O bottlenecks and server availability monitoring as major virtualization challenges.
Another survey conducted by Diskeeper Corporation Europe of 500 IT personnel showed 80% were aware of the major problems of I/O bottlenecks.

Mandeep Birdi comments, “Effectively shared resources are of critical importance in a virtual environment, but are severely impacted by three key barriers: I/O bandwidth bottlenecks due to accelerated fragmentation on virtual platforms, virtual machines competing for shared I/O resources and not effectively prioritized across the platform and thirdly, virtual disks set to dynamically grow do not resize when data is deleted – an issue known as bloating. Instead free space is simply just wasted. These problems can result in actually costing the company unnecessary spend on additional hardware as well as time in dealing with the issues”.

The survey also highlighted that 25% of respondents are not dealing with the problems of I/O bottlenecks, while 5% said they just purchase more disks/spindles.
Adding to this, Mandeep Birdi also reported that many IT users who are migrating to or have migrated over to a virtual environment, and have typically employed a SAN, are being told they don’t need to defragment the SAN, and that there isn’t an I/O bottleneck issue. He comments “This is false, the I/O bottleneck issue can have a huge effect on performance, and if the customer is not aware that this is what’s occurring in the SAN environment, it can again end up costing the company a lot of money with thinking they have to purchase more hardware, when in fact this might not be the case at all.”

Diskeeper’s Data Performance Software Cuts Four-Day Backup Time in Half

London — David Anderson, Network Manager for Cramlington Learning Village School, gave his feedback on how Diskeeper® dramatically cut their server backup times in half. The school, which has been graded 'outstanding' in the last three OFSTED inspections, had the problem of backup times taking four days to complete.

“Symantec BackupExec V12.5, our primary backup application, was taking considerable amount of time to backup due to file fragmentation. Microsoft 2003 Windows and other free defrag tools were not providing an adequate level of defragmentation when working with our large terabyte drives,” comments David Anderson.

He further states: “We tried and tested numerous products and found Diskeeper had the best results... Diskeeper was not only easy to deploy but also proved to decrease the time our backups now take, by an average of 50%... Our backup software showed improved data transfer speed going from 500m/bits per minute to now 1Gb per minute. We have Diskeeper installed onto ten MS Windows 2003 servers which have numerous SAN drives attached to each one. We use an EMC CX3-10 SAN.”

It was also noted by Mr Anderson that the Support Contract Company had said there shouldn’t be a problem with fragmentation related issues. “Our Support Contract Company said there shouldn’t be an issue with fragmentation. However, since installing Diskeeper, drive failures have decreased, and we also don’t have to replace as many drives on the SAN as often as before. Diskeeper also helps with improved access times.”

A recent survey carried out with the existing customers of Diskeeper Corporation Europe, showed over 75% have implemented or are planning to implement a SAN solution. The same survey also revealed that 80% were aware of the detrimental effect of fragmentation on I/O performance.

Internationally Acclaimed Wildlife Photographer Heather Angel Demonstrates How to Photograph Endangered Animals and Plants

The Heather Angel Wildlife and Natural History Workshop, now in its 15th year, will be held at Saint Hill Manor, Sussex, on Saturday 23rd July, 2011. The Manor is one of the finest historic sandstone buildings in England, set in fifty-nine acres of landscaped gardens and a wooded lake, and provides the perfect location for this workshop.

London – Professor Heather Angel, the author of over sixty books and the recipient of numerous awards, will be holding an exclusive wildlife and natural history workshop in coordination with Nikon UK and Think Tank camera bags at Saint Hill Manor on Saturday 23rd July, 2011. Innocent Vitamins Refutes Innocent Drinks’ Trademark Claim

Founder, Dawn Reid, refutes the breach of trademark claim made by Innocent Drinks and reveals the timeline of events from starting the company, launching the product and applying for trademark protection.

West Sussex – Recent claims made by Fresh Trading Ltd, manufacturers of Innocent smoothies and majority-owned by The Coca Cola Company, regarding trademark infringement by Innocent Vitamins and Nutrition Ltd are refuted by the company’s founder, Mrs Dawn Reid. As pointed out to Fresh Trading’s lawyers, Fresh Trading does not have a trademark in Class 5 over the word ‘innocent’ in respect of vitamin supplements. It is noteworthy that Fresh Trading only applied for a trademark covering vitamins at the end of January 2011, five months after Innocent Vitamins’ children’s multivitamin was launched and available for sale.

Following substantial research into the children’s vitamin market, in June 2010 Mrs Reid launched Innocent Vitamins and Nutrition Ltd. She wanted to bring to market a multivitamin and mineral supplement that she was happy to give to her own children, completely free of any sugars, sweeteners or additives. This idea meant departing from the market norm which was to produce chewable vitamins for children that often contain additives, sugars, artificial sweeteners, bulking and gelling agents.

The name chosen – Innocent Vitamins - reflects the absence of additives and communicates the nature of the product and the choice of name was, itself, entirely innocent. The use of a common English word like ‘innocent’ has been adopted by numerous brand owners and attracts limited trademark protection as it is used to describe a product of unadulterated nature.

The adoption by Fresh Trading of the common word ‘innocent’ does not give it a monopoly in relation to goods outside those for which it has sought and obtained trademark protection. As pointed out to Fresh Trading’s lawyers, their recent application for a trademark in Class 5 covering vitamins has all the appearance of a business which regrets that it did not seek trademark protection in relation to vitamin products, and has now identified a product which might prevent it from diversifying into that field. It is Innocent Vitamins’ opinion that Fresh Trading now seems to be claiming infringement unfairly in order to remove this obstacle to their possible future business plans.

Innocent Vitamins and Nutrition has filed its own trademark application in order to recognise the rights it has already acquired under common law. Fresh Trading’s lawyers wrote to Innocent Vitamins and Nutrition on 14 Feb 2011, just two weeks after Fresh Trading had applied for a Class 5 trademark in relation to vitamins, claiming trademark infringement on a trademark that Fresh Trading has not been granted.

Innocent Vitamins maintains its position that there is no confusion, or likelihood of confusion, with Innocent smoothies. Both the point of sale packaging and http://www.innocentvitamins.co.uk make it abundantly clear that the product was developed by Mrs Reid, inspired by her two children as depicted in photographs on the product packaging, the company website and advertising. Smoothie drinks and vitamin supplements in a capsule form are two distinctly different products.

It is worth noting that in the UK and EU, there are many brand owners using the word ‘innocent’ as listed by the Intellectual Property Office http://www.ipo.gov.uk for the UK and http://www.oami.europa.eu for European trademarks.

“I genuinely believe that my company can peacefully coexist with Innocent smoothies, and I would be delighted to meet up with them as we have already offered,” stated Mrs Reid. “My aim has always been to bring a healthy, sugar and additive free vitamin supplement to market and I am delighted with the positive response I have received from parents, shop owners and, most importantly, children.

“Innocent Vitamins and Nutrition Ltd has not been notified of any court proceedings by Fresh Trading Ltd, nor is it the wish of Innocent Vitamins to enter into court proceedings. We look forward to existing harmoniously with Fresh Trading Ltd for many years to come and wish them every success with their business.”

iPhone App Gives New Drivers Crucial Stopping Distance and Time Information

Stratford upon Avon – DSE Technology has launched an iPhone app designed to give new drivers crucial stopping distance and time information, called StopOMeter.

In order to gain experience, drivers have to cover many miles before they begin to understand the relationship between speed of travel and the distance (and time) required for them to come to a stop in an emergency. New drivers have not yet had the luxury of covering enough miles to understand this relationship. But now, the new StopOMeter iPhone app helps them learn about this relationship in a much shorter period of time.

The app shows new drivers what their exact stopping distances and stopping times are from any speed. A countdown system tells the driver whether or not their estimates of stopping distances are correct. In addition, an Eco Driving module promotes smooth and safe driving and teaches superior anticipation skills. The quicker a new driver can learn these essential skills, the less likely they are to be involved in an accident.

The Highway Code states that you should not travel faster than a speed that allows you to “stop comfortably on your own side of the road within the distance you can see to be clear”. The StopOMeter app helps new drivers keep to this golden rule in an easy-to-understand and intuitive format.

East Sussex, United Kingdom - The four intrepid supporters of the SafePoint Trust – Anna Koska, Nicoletta Iacobacci, Clare Beale and Catherine English – have recently triumphed in their mission to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. And not only have they completed this gruelling challenge in an impressive time, they are also celebrating being the first all-mother group to climb the feared Western Beach route. Congratulations ladies!

But now the hard work really begins. The SafePoint team has begun rolling out a hard-hitting campaign across Tanzania to raise awareness of the dangers of syringe re-use. Using one syringe to treat many patients is one of the single biggest causes of death in the developing world, and causes millions of infections each year in Africa and the rest of the developing world.

On their descent, the ladies travelled to Dar es Salaam where they called a press conference, attended by 25 major Tanzanian TV and radio channels. They informed their captivated audience why they took on the challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, and their decision to raise money to donate single use (AD) syringes to Tanzania. Their climb has raised funds to contribute to their supplies in compliance with the ECSA resolution*.

Famous celebrity and comedian, Masanja, assisted the ladies in the press conference by demonstrating the three-point SafePoint message, taken from the WHO injection safety guidelines as per the diagram below.

New Packet, Used Once, Safely Disposed

Masanja validated the importance of safe injections and said, “I decided to help SafePoint make a public awareness film as I am a proud Tanzanian, and know that in the village where I come from, many people are unaware of unsafe injection practices.

“I hope that this film encourages healthcare workers to use a new syringe each time they give an injection, and that it informs our parents and children on the risks they take if they don’t demand one. To all fans of the Orijino Komedi Show, make sure you never have an unsafe injection again and spread the message for me.”

Yet, despite clear evidence pointing to significant numbers of deaths caused by a lack of injection safety procedures in many hospitals and medical centres in Tanzania, talks to date with Health Ministers in the country have remained unsuccessful. Marc Koska OBE, founder of the SafePoint Trust, originally met with the Hon Prof David Mwakyusa back in March 2010. At this meeting, the Hon Minister gladly accepted the donation of the film from SafePoint, and agreed to create a campaign to air it. But since this meeting, Marc has been met with closed doors and unable to progress with discussions further. For the SafePoint team, it is extremely frustrating, as they are only too aware from their experiences in other countries that public awareness is paramount to the changeover to single-use syringes.

Elections have taken precedence within the Tanzanian Health Authority, with little or no reference given to the unacceptable ‘unsafe injection’ culture. Also this week, Mr Deo Mtasiwa, Chief Medical Officer of Tanzania, stated his belief that no diseases have been spread through injection re-use.

While SafePoint appreciates the positive actions that have taken place in Tanzania to address the problem, such as the training of thousands of nurses, his claim is one that SafePoint rejects. Their view is backed by the announcement at the Annual meeting of The Safe Injection Global Network (SIGN) that a staggering 14% of all HIV infections are a direct result of unsafe injections.

Injection safety needs to move up the agenda, fast. Medical staff urgently need the resources to save lives; not to take them. Cost isn’t the issue - the cost of an AD syringe is 100 Shillings in Tanzania; the cost of a popular soft drink is 500 Shillings. “Mara moja katika maisha, mara nguni ni kifo.” A syringe used once is life. Used twice is death.

Jim Brandenburg travelled the globe as a photographer with National Geographic Magazine for several decades. His extensive body of work has been published throughout the world and his photographs have won a multitude of national and international awards. He was the recipient of the ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ award by the Natural History Museum-London and BBC Wildlife Magazine, and twice was named ‘Magazine Photographer of the Year’ by the National Press Photographer's Association (NPPA) for his National Geographic work. Brandenburg was presented with the ‘World Achievement Award’ from the United Nations in recognition of his use of nature photography to raise public awareness for the environment.

Jim Brandenburg’s presentation will explore the full circle of his career with highlights starting with the early days at a small rural newspaper. From there, he went directly to National Geographic Magazine where he worked on assignments all over the world for the magazine, book division and television. He will show a selection of his outstanding work with wild arctic and grey wolves. After publishing several books on wolves, he set himself the assignment of only shooting one picture per day for the entire autumn season. His book and DVD Chased by the Light followed, as well as the sequel Looking for the Summer. He will tells us about his philanthropic work that now entails saving the remnant native prairies in the land where his ancestors settled after immigrating from Europe and Scandinavia; the land where their new lives began by plowing up that native prairie – thus completing the circle.

Michael Huggan’s Photographic Exhibition in Alton Opened by Dr Mike Maloney OBE

Alton, Hampshire – ‘Wildlife and Wild Places’, the latest photographic exhibition of distinguished and award-winning wildlife photographer, Michael Huggan, was officially opened by Dr Mike Maloney OBE on 6th August 2010. The free exhibition is being held at The Allen Gallery in Alton, Hampshire, until 5pm 28th August 2010.

Dr Mike Maloney OBE, Britain’s most decorated press photographer, was delighted to have been invited to open the exhibition by Michael Huggan ARPS (Royal Photographic Society Associate with Distinction) whom he said in his opening speech, was the best wildlife photographer he knows.

The exhibition is called ‘Wildlife and Wild Places’ because Michael’s photography has grown from purely wildlife to everything that surrounds it. It includes stunning photographs taken in Africa, India, America and the Camargue in France, of not only the wildlife but also the locations, people and their environment.

Dr Mike Maloney OBE, in his opening address, said:

“When you commission Michael Huggan, you know you will receive a higher standard of image than most photographers can achieve. Michael really understands how to capture that perfect shot.”

Also on display was Michael Huggan’s 2011 calendar, considered by Dr Mike Maloney to be the best wildlife calendar he had ever seen.

Passionate anglers launch Fishbook.com – a website seeking to give fishermen worldwide a community to share knowledge, catches, venues and much more…

United Kingdom - 2 years ago, Steve Forehead, a committed fisherman, noticed that there was a void on the internet for dedicated angling 'community' websites. Together with his business partner, another fisherman, they brainstormed ideas and came up with the concept that has now become Fishbook.com.
The aim of the project is to provide a dedicated community which is designed by anglers, for anglers. The website is organic and will evolve as the needs and wishes of its members change.

There are many websites on the internet that are for anglers, but these tend to be forum-driven whereas Fishbook.com is based around a community concept. Anglers can sign up for free, display their past and present catches, record their fishing trips, analyse them, share experiences and invite their friends on future sessions.

Global Angling Community

Although primarily for the UK, the website has been designed so it can be joined and utilised anywhere in the world. Future expansion of the site will take in specific regional requirements to cater for those anglers based in other countries.

One innovative feature of the website is that each individual venue listed becomes a micro site within the main site, all the details are recorded and once members start fishing there, a catch report for that specific venue is recorded for all other members to see.

Whispers from the bank

Another feature of the site coming soon will be the ability for members to upload their catches live from the bank (whispers from the bank) using their mobile phone. In this way, their session can be followed by their friends, wherever they are.

Fishing Competitions

There will be many competitions running with various prizes to be won. From trophies to respected brands of fishing tackle. All of the registered members on the website will be entered automatically once they land an eligible verified catch.

In addition, he was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the North American Nature Photographers Association.

Dr Mike Maloney OBE

Mike Maloney is Britain’s most highly decorated press-photographer with 105 major prizes to his name. Voted three times Press Photographer of the Year, he has had numerous royal tours to his credit, as well as photographing world leaders such as Clinton, Regan, Gorbachev and Yelstin, with invitations to dine at both the White House and the Kremlin. Mike was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts degree by the University of Lincoln for ‘a lifetime’s work in photography and his help to young people’. At the ceremony, he was able to read a personal letter of congratulations from The Queen Mother.

In the next issue of Nikon Owner, Mike recalls the pivotal moment which led him to take the road south to London from his humble beginnings at a provincial newspaper in Lincoln. He narrates some of the singular stories from the glittering career that followed, resulting in dozens of awards and an OBE from The Queen.

The app provides a complete solution for driving instructors, which takes advantage of iPhone’s built-in accelerometer and its global positioning system (GPS) to provide a repeatable method of giving instant and accurate feedback to students when performing controlled (emergency) stops and eco driving tasks. The app also gives the instructor an easy way of recording changes in students’ competency levels as their driving lessons progress. A simple road sign quiz is included as an additional educational tool.

At the end of each lesson, an email that comprises details of the route taken, brake training tests performed and any eco driving exceedances is automatically sent to the student. A list of all the changes in competency level is included in the email so that the student has a permanent record of their progress.

The app’s main features are:

Eco Driving – Instant feedback as to how smoothly the student is driving which dramatically improves fuel economy as well as anticipation and planning skills. Exceedances are viewable in Google Earth ©.

Brake Training - Compares student’s controlled stops to the Highway Code stopping distance table which means no more guesswork as to a pass or fail. Full graph and results given for each test. The student’s efforts can even be compared to the competency of an expert.

Competencies – Can be changed as the student progresses from lesson to lesson. All Driving Standards Agency (DSA) competencies are included and competency changes are e-mailed to the student at the end of each lesson.

The Driving Instructor iPhone app is the brainchild of Motopilot Rider Coaching’s principal, Duncan Mackillop: “The idea was first conceived because of the profound lack of ability of most drivers to use the brakes properly. I reasoned that if learner drivers had a way of really understanding how good or bad their braking performance was at the early stages of their training, then this would remain with them throughout their driving career,” explains Duncan.

Although the Highway Code gives a clear table of the expected performance for controlled stops, until now there has been no way of relating this data to real world situations. The app gives both the instructor and the learner driver real time and accurate information on the student’s use of the brakes.

Forest Row, East Sussex - Marc Koska OBE and his charity, The SafePoint Trust, recently launched an exciting new project for Tanzania at The Swan Mountain Range Restaurant in Forest Row during Mountain Range’s 5th anniversary celebrations.

Generously supported by David Downard, Mountain Range Restaurants CEO, guests were warmly invited to congratulate the company for a successful 5 years in business as well as to celebrate Marc Koska’s achievements in global healthcare and to support his charity The SafePoint Trust on their next venture: “The Climb Tanzania 2010”.

A team of three mothers from East Sussex have taken up the challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise enough money (£100,000) to enable The SafePoint Trust to donate 2 million AD (Auto Disable) syringes to Tanzania. This will enable Tanzania to kick start this safe injection healthcare project and so become a safe injection country. They plan to present the donation to Tanzania’s minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof David Mwakyusathe, in person shortly after they finish the climb, which is set to take place at the end of October 2010. It is likely to take about 7 days to reach the summit. The climbers, who will very quickly have to get used to high altitudes, are:

Fund raising

The SafePoint Trust is encouraging local businesses to buy a flag for £5,000 each. All flags will journey up to the summit of 19,365 ft and be photographed with the climbers, capturing their euphoric moment. Those businesses which buy flags will of course feature heavily in all publicity that surrounds the climb, since collectively, by donating 2 Million syringes to Tanzania, they will ensure that a total of 700,000 people will receive safe injections.

Why Tanzania?

Tanzania is at the forefront of safe healthcare in Africa and is to become one of only two countries converted to using AD syringes in the ECSA Region (Eastern, Central and Southern Africa). With their policy already in place, trained healthcare workers and a public information film produced and donated by SafePoint, the country is ready to reduce its medical costs and ease its HIV/Hepatitis disease burden. More importantly, with this donation in place, Tanzania will have sufficient AD syringes to stock all 26 regions throughout the entire country from the very start of this initiative.

Official opening of the exhibition at The Allen Gallery, Alton, Hampshire, will be by Britain’s most decorated press photographer,

Hampshire – Throughout the month of August 2010, award-winning Hampshire-based wildlife photographer, Michael Huggan, Royal Photographic Society Associate with Distinction (ARPS), will be exhibiting a collection of his photographs at The Allen Gallery, Alton, Hampshire. The free exhibition is entitled, “Wildlife and Wild Places’.

Dr Mike Maloney OBE, Britain’s most decorated press photographer, will be officially opening the exhibition at 7:00pm on Friday 6th August 2010 (by invitation only).

“The Allen Gallery serves the local community and promotes different skills locally. As a local photographer, I was extremely happy to be asked to display my pictures for the month of August. I decided to call the exhibition ‘Wildlife and Wild Places’ because my photography has grown from purely wildlife to everything that surrounds it. Of the places I have visited (Africa, India, the Camargue in France and parts of the American dessert), one must take into account the locations, people and their environment. All these elements, together, make the final picture,” explains Michael.

On display will be images, canvas prints and cards of locations, wildlife and customs of Africa, India and the US. The exhibition will also include images of ‘Marwari’ horses in India and of the American Mustang horses of New Mexico.

‘Wildlife and Wild Places’ is on at The Allen Gallery, Church Street, Alton, Hampshire, GU34 2BW Tel 0845 603 5635, from 10:00am Tuesday 03 Aug 2010 to 5:00pm Saturday 28 Aug 2010. Admission is free.

Miami, FL – “On the Mike with Mike Sherman”, the premier music and lifestyle celebrity-driven TV show, goes one on one with some of the biggest names in music in this week’s show, covering – as always - the best events in entertainment.

Mike was able to go one on one with premier boy band from the 80's and 90's - the rejuvenated New Kids On The Block whilst on their north American tour.

In this week’s show, Mike also talks to Joey McCantrye and Jordan about what it’s like to perform at Radio City Music Hall and to be making great music again. The band performs some of their new hits in front of a sell-out crowd at the Filmore theatre, Miami Beach, Florida.

Meanwhile, Mike's correspondent, Natalie Culliar, stops by to meet with the ever so talented and, at times, controversial Erika Badu. She discusses her new album and her views on politics, life and music. But, obviously, the fun doesn't stop there.

Mike’s other correspondent - "Mack at night" from Clear Channel’s Y100 - catches up with pop and rock sensation, Kevin Rudolf, right before he performs in front of thousands of screaming fans at Sun Life Stadium. The concert also features performances from hip hop sensation Nelly and The New Boys.

Then Mike Sherman and Mack from Y100 were guest celebrities at this year’s Home Safe charity event for homeless and foster children. This year’s Master of Ceremonies for the event was DMC from the legendary hip hop group, Run DMC, and the chairman of this outstanding foundation is rock ‘n roll hall of famer, the magnificent saxophone player from one of the best rock bands of all time: Clarence Clemons from The Bruce Springstein & The E Street Band. Clarence talks about how Home Safe has been such a significant blessing to assist and find homes for these less fortunate kids and how the foundation is growing every year. Plus, Max Weinberg from the Conan O’Brien Show and Steve Van Zandt from the band all shared there views about this great charity.

To wrap up the show, Mike's Las Vegas correspondent, Cameron Miller, attends this year’s 2010 Playboy Playmate of the Year Party from the beautiful Palms Hotel where he interviews all of this year’s playmates. The party includes an exclusive live performance from R&B heart throb, Robin Thicke.

LifeSaver is a campaign that is inviting all global AD (auto-disable) syringe manufacturers to include the new LifeSaver logo and message: "New Packet. Used Once. Safely Disposed" on all their packaging. LifeSaver represents the procedure given by a health worker and received by a patient, and can be simply adopted, free of charge, by any organisation. The logo is distinctive and easily recognized, and will act as a unique guarantee of a safe injection.
